Picton and Wilton Anglican Churches

Roster Role: W5 Welcomer

Edit

Purpose of welcomer role: provide a friendly and engaging greeting to everyone who attends church so that they feel comfortable and welcome.

Two welcomers per service; arrive 30 mins before start of service.

Tasks:

  • Setup
    • Nametag station: table and chair in church entryway, blank nametags and pens
    • Nametag scribe: either one of the welcomers can write the nametags, or (preferable) ask one of the children to be the nametag scribe (so that both welcomers can focus on guests)
    • Locate newsletters and have them ready at welcoming table
    • Setup tea and coffee (and water) station at rear of church
    • Check entry area for cleanliness and tidiness
    • Identify a regular congregation member who could be the newcomer “host” for the service and ask if they are happy to do so (in which case the nominated host should remain around the welcoming area) (see below)
  • Greet church attendees
    • Smile and welcome attendees as they arrive; make eye contact and take the initiative to greet. Welcoming is an opportunity to help set the tone of the upcoming service so aim to show personal warmth (look like you enjoy welcoming people!).
    • Aim to welcome everyone who comes to the service, including children.
    • Introduce yourself (as needed) and ask their name – if you have met them and can’t remember name, consider “I don’t recall if we’ve been formally introduced, I’m <name>”.
    • Hand out newsletter.
    • Offer nametag and refer to nametag scribe.
    • Encourage regular congregation members to sit towards the front.
    • Identify new and new-ish people, and:
      • Introduce self, welcome & orient the newcomer and explain what to expect at today’s service
      • If possible, refer the newcome to a “host”
  • Pack up Tea and coffee station at rear of church – return items to kitchen.
